Tenor saxophonist David Murray, the giant of modern jazz, fuses all the great things
that black music has produced: Gospel sounds, free jazz, Afro-Caribbean, blues,
soul as well as the beautiful standards of classic jazz. Murray’s colorful tone,
unsurpassed intonation, sense of swing, melancholy tones, improvisational power
and ingenuity make him one of the most important voices in music today.
His new quartet, which mainly plays his own compositions, gives the three young
musicians plenty of space. “Jazz legend David Murray is back with the next
generation of geniuses”, writes the Washington Post about the new quartet.
The combination of David Murray’s mastery – critics unanimously agree that he is at
the top of his game right now – along with the infusion of this powerful elite of the
New York jazz scene is a force to be reckoned with. The fierceness of Marta
Sanchez on the piano, the poetry and dexterity of Luke Stewart on the bass, and the
driving pulse of Russel Carter on the drums is a perfect fit for the leading
saxophonist of his era.
The first album of the Quartet, “Francesca” was released on Intakt in May 2024

“(David Murray) played with such impassioned brilliance that anybody of the opinion that he was not as relevant to the contemporary scene as he was in his 1980s heyday would have had to think again. This fine new album with an excellent quartet comprising younger players finds him on stellar form, making the perhaps overlooked point that the 69-year-old saxophonist has always been a strong composer as well as improviser.” (Kevin Le Gendre, Jazzwise)
“(…) it’s a high energy session, with everyone locked in and cranked up. His solos climb from bicep flexing low notes to his trademark squeals, and the band swing hard behind him. Sanchez’ occasional solos flower beautifully.” (Phil Freeman, The Wire)
“While he often plays with economy and acuity, he can still blow dense and hard with unassailable fluency” (Downbeat)
